Well Bob, that may be true if you listen to that silly "rat" in Punxsutawney, P.A....
I listen to Chuck, the GroundHog in Staten Island. He's a local who knows the weather in Broad Channel. ;)

MY GRANDFATHER, WILLIAM A. FROEB WAS ONE OF THE FIRST RESIDENTS OF BROAD CHANNEL. HE, TOGETHER WITH HIS SON WILLIAM V. FROEB, MOVED HIS SUMMER HOME FROM CARNESE TO THE VERY END OF THE 18th ROAD ON A HOME MADE BARGE BEFORE I WAS BORN. I BELEIVE THE HOUSE IS STILL THERE. I SPENT MANY, MANY, HAPPY SUMMERS THERE AS A CHILD.

It's that time of year again-The Broad Channel Athletic Club/Jamaica Bay Little League will be holding a parents/coaches meeting Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2005 in the North Channel Yacht Club at 7:00pm. We are asking that parents get involved in their child's after school activities. If you can not coach that is fine, we also need help with various committees such as: equipment, uniforms, picture day, opening day ceremonies & parade, field clean-up, etc. So please stop by and get involved in Little League!!! The 2005 board has been meeting and our registration dates have been chosen. For more information please visit the broadchannelac.com website.

 Hello everyone,
I lived in Broad Channel only until I was seven [about 1968]. We lived on Walton Road. Althouth my years there were short, my Aunt and Uncle Clare and John Roman and Peggy and Bob Goetke, along with my Grand Parents, Francis and John Geotke lived there for many years...my memoeris are all good ones.

 ST. VIRGILIUS SCHOOL IS CLOSING!
The final word has been issued regarding the fate of St. Virgilius School. This is a sad, sad day for the Catholic Community in Broad Channel.

Check out Channel 4 News tonight at 11:00 - they interviewed people before and after tonight's meeting about the closing of St. Virgilius ...

Having lived and attended the old elementry school on Church Road as a child, and seeing Broad Channel on your web site I am amazed at the changes. I have bitter sweet memories of the town, but no doubt, no argument it is unique and I can see why it has grown so popular.
2/8/05 11:28:56 PM - ip address:66.191.60.179
I am saddened to here of St. Virgilius' closing. Because of Broad Channel’s unique location, I am curious to know if the diocese took into account the additional stress this closing would create not only to the parish families but to the local public school. Please let me know if there is anything I can do with my contacts within the diocese to help preserve a Catholic education on Broad Channel.
I recall being the first student from St. Virgilius to attend Archbishop Molloy HS and meeting the brothers at orientation and telling them my home parish and them quizzing me on where St. Virgilius was and who he was.

This is the official website of the Brooklyn Queens Diocese. Send them an email why you think STV should not be closed. Hopefully the town can be heard and STV will remain open.

I would just like to say I am deeply saddened to hear of the closing of St.Virgilius. I enjoyed all of my eight years there, it was one of the best times in my life. So many friends made there have been friends throughout my lifetime.
Thank you to all the dedicated nuns and teachers who molded so many lives. I think of them still. And thanks to all the parents who worked so tirelessly to make St.Virgilius a great little school.
2/9/05 10:24:53 AM - ip address:170.224.224.89
St. Virgilius educated so many fine and successful people. We owe our success to all that we learned there. I, my sister, Helen and my brother, Richard as well my three children Sean, Tara, and Kevin benefitted tremendously from our education there. It is with a sad heart that I hear of the closing of this great institution. It will certainly leave a hole in the community of Broad Channel.
2/9/05 1:19:06 PM - ip address:4.10.236.96
If just one busload of children from overcrowded St. Francis De Sales in Belle Harbor was sent to St. Virgilius, I am sure that St. Francis would probably still be overcrowded, and St. Virgilius, the school that educated three generations of my family, would be able to remain open. There are more than a handfull of plausible solutions here. It's really sad that the conclusion that was made is so obviously not the best one, or one that shows the children of this community that the Diocese of Brooklyn cares about their education or their future. If the Diocese of Brooklyn is not "In the business of education" then what is to come of the Roman Catholic Church when this generation of children grows up and away from their faith? I know this pulling away from the church is already begining in my generation, so it must be expected to only get worse as time passes. Something else must be done to save this school.

WHEN THINGS CHANGE IN LIFE SOMETIMES ALL YOU HAVE ARE MEMORIES. EVERYONE OVER THE DECADES WHO ATTENDED ST. VIRGILIUS HAS WONDERFUL MEMORIES, STORIES, AND FREINDS, WE'VE MADE FOR A LIFETIME.
IF THIS SCHOOL CLOSES THERE WILL BE NONE OF THAT FOR THE CHILDREN WHO ATTEND THERE NOW. IT IS ONE OF THE CORNERSTONES THAT MADE BROAD CHANNEL "GOD'S LITTLE ACRE" WE PRAY IT DOESN'T CLOSE.

Where's all the money the St.Virgilius Parish Council had in the so called "Emergency Fund"?? Where's all the money Father White collected from our community for the "Alive N Hope" fund. Remember he was asking people to donate $5,000 to $15,000.00 a person and many people did. Shame, Shame, Shame on everyone involved!! Maybe that hidden account of $273,000.00 could have been used to modernize St. Virgilius which would have increased our enrollment, which would have saved us from this day. Good Luck in your battle with the Diocese. I've been there once and it's not going to be easy!! Many of us have history in St. Virgilius school and it is a very sad day for the community!!! First the Parish Hall, then the School, next the church.
2/9/05 7:32:33 PM - ip address:64.12.116.133
Sad day is right... in my opinion the closing of our school will ultimately result in families moving to other communities that can offer a catholic education for their children - which is the beginning of the end for Broad Channel. First the school then the church... what next?? After last night's meeting I have faith that Broad Channel parents and alumni will not take this decision lying down and they'll fight to the end... I just hope it's not in vain. Hats off to Bill Schilling and Ricky Henglein for speaking up at the meeting... good job guys!!
2/9/05 8:05:00 PM - ip address:24.90.202.137
I am a student at St. Virgilius School. I am devastated that the school is closing. The school is like a second home to me and now the home is closing its doors. When I heard the news I was shocked. I really didn't think it would happen to this school. I thought it was just gonna pass by. I keep thinking I am in a dream but I am not. It is reality. So I am asking everyone in Broad Channel to donate money to the school so it can stay open. You can give the money to the school at 16 Noel Road. I LOVE ST. VIRGILIUS! So please donate the money. LET'S KEEP THOSE DOORS FROM CLOSING!

There is now a St. Virgilius Forum online in the Forums section: http://BroadChannelNY.com/Forums
This forum (which is long overdue) is dedicated to information, sound-offs and for the general love of our Church and School.
2/9/05 9:13:10 PM - ip address:198.65.194.198
What is it that the school has to offer the students? Nothing!!! They still have the same desks from 50 years ago. All the fundraising they did was to keep the heat and lights on. Fundraising is suppose to be done to buy new things and maybe "better" the school such as new computers maybe one for each student in each class like EVERY other school or maybe new desks. Fundraising is not supposed to be done to keep the doors open, lights on and for heat. That’s what the tuition is supposed to do. Maybe if ST Virgilius had more to offer people would have put there kids there and the school would not have closed. There is no lunchroom. There is no Gym. This is 2005 not 1900. Even catholic schools that had more too offer the students have closed. So why should St Virgilius stay open because all the parents have bad mouthed other schools so bad that they are embarrassed to have to send there kids there now because of what they said!!!

WHAT A SIN TO CLOSE THAT BEAUTIFUL SCHOOL
2/10/05 10:30:59 AM - ip address:64.12.116.134
As the son and father of graduates and a graduate myself of St. Virgilus it saddens me greatly to see the closing of the school. It is hard for me to understand why a school that is willing to become self sustaining without the subsidies of the dioceses needs to be closed. The only answer I can think of is that the other catholic schools in the ares need our money to remain open. I know alot of people are putting the blame on our administratior Father John, but it is not his fault. He inherited a bad situation and has worked tirelessly to help the parish and school through a very hard time. So don't take your anger out on him, call the Bishop's office and tell him how you feel. He is the one making all the decisions that affect our school. People of St. Virgilius don't give up the fight!
2/10/05 11:01:14 AM - ip address:68.160.207.239
Hear Hear Pat!! It is not our New priest who has only had the position for a couple of months. If anything people should be questioning the St.Virgilius Parish Council they are the ones who have been running the school and the church. They have been our connection to the diocese and the budget keepers!! People should give Father John a chance I'm sure he will do whatever it takes to keep the doors open. Our new priest seems to love our community and makes an effort to meet and interact with its people. Something we havn't seen in years!!! He does not deserve to be yelled at from a church pew, this is not his fault. This was the fault of others way before Father John.

Dear Miss or Mister "What is it that the school has to offer the students?".... my first response would be to say get a backbone and sign your name if you are such an expert ... secondly... St. Virgilius may not have a gym or a lunchroom, but what they do have is tradition, rules, values, SAFETY, and spiritual guidance... I loved having a 50 year old desk... it had history and character. I don't know about you, but I had 8 great years at that school and made my best friends there ... I would trade a gym for that experience any day.
2/10/05 3:22:59 PM - ip address:216.86.51.146
 Dear Miss Murray,
So what your saying is that you send your kid to school based on tradition. Not an education? And safety...... I'm sure st vigilius is not the only safe school. We live in what i call a "safe" community and i beleive both schools are safe. Rules.....so st virgilius is now the only school with rules? I know people who have taken there kids out of st virgilius and put them in other schools "public" and "catholic" and every kid had a problem because they were behind because st virgilius had nothing to offer. Besides the school is run by the parents which is ridiculous. And yes I am an expert at this experience. Get a reality check you can make friends anywhere. The most important thing is modern technology and this st virgilius does not have to offer any kid and it never will. Spiritual guidance ..... I dont see you at church on sunday so how much spiritual guidence did st virgilius have on you? All you st virgilius people are knocking our public school. PS47 is better than stvirgilius besides where is it that the st virgilius kids go when they need help over to PS47 because your school doesnt have the resources to help them. All that money people pay and they need to ask the (free) public school system for help. And i only see this happen at st virgilius all other catholic shools have the facilities to help there students. I am sorry that your school is closing but i am only sorry because our new modernized public school is going to be overcrowded.
2/10/05 5:03:40 PM - ip address:208.44.21.13
 Good for you, Jen Murray.
I will add my input, as well, to the person who thought it acceptable to offer nothing but malicious comments regarding our beloved school but did not have the guts to leave a name. You obviously did not attend SVS or your email would have been filled with stories reflecting the same beautiful memories as those who had attended.
I did not attend St Virgilius because my family lived on Long Island. We have, however, had a summerhouse in Broad Channel since 1966. My mother and father were baptized in St Virgilius Church 74 years ago, attended St Virgilius school and were married in the church. All of my aunts and uncles and many cousins also shared the same bonds with St Virgilius. My grandfather installed the stained-glass windows in the church many years ago (perhaps you've seen them? Aw, maybe not).
I now do live in BC with my husband and 3 children since 1993. We send our children to St Virgilius and are very pleased with the wonderful education they are receiving. (FYI, 100% of the 2004 graduates were accepted at the high school of their choice and many have gone on to receive Honors with Distinction in their first trimester at their high school. In fact one child received full scholarships to Regis, Xavier and Malloy. Let me stop bragging). Equally as important to us is the fact that the same positive values , morals and principles that we are rasing our children to live by are instilled on a daily basis at SVS. We have an extremely dedicated teaching staff and a wonderful principal, Mrs. Phelan.
Let's be clear... no one has to justify to anyone else his or her decision to send a child to St Virgilius, PS 47 or any other school. It is the parents' choice. Clearly, though, you have missed the point about what it is that makes a school great or not. It is not the desks or the lunch room. It is the comfort of knowing that our children feel safe, secure, and happy while receiving a sound education. Whether you believe it or not, St Virgilius School and Church are the cornerstones that make Broad Channel a great community. The possibility (we've only begun to fight) of St Virgilius closing is a COMMUNITY issue not a SVS v PS 47 issue. Either get on board and join the fight as a true Broad Channelite or stay out of the arena. You have a right to your opinion. Believe me, I never hesitate to give mine. The difference is that I have been raised to do so with integrity in a polite and courteous manner.

CM - whoever you may be - I did not mention PS 47 in any of my postings no less knock it - I'm glad that you have such passion for your school - that's the same passion I have for St. Virgilius.

I just finished reading the above and I cannot believe what I have read. Why in the world would anyone in their right mind condone or even suggest that the closing of STV is good for the town. To be honest I have not been a fan of some of the events that went on at STV over the last 10 years myself, but I would never condone the closing of the school. I agree that money raised over the years were put into lights, heat and fixing up the school but lets be honest here, the school is old, the diocese should have made funds available over the years to upgrade the school and they chose not too. You are right, STV does not have a gym and I for one have been a fan of building a gym in BC for all the children not just STV or PS 47. Lets keep in mind that PS 47 is also a school without a gym, we are probably the only community in the city of New York that does not have a city owned gym for the kids to play sports or have after school activities. The parents that choose to enroll their children in STV have paid a yearly tuition fee, and it's not cheap. These parents (and I was one of them) also paid city and state taxes for the students that attend public schools in the City Of New York. I will tell you that if the City Of New York decided to close down PS 47, I along with many if not all the parents of STV children would have been or would be in an uproar ... we would stand shoulder to shoulder with you and help you win your fight to keep PS 47 open, because it's the right thing to do. CM writes and I quote " every kid had a problem because they were behind because STV had nothing to offer" That is the farthest statement from the truth, STV has many graduated students that excelled in professional fields such as Doctors, lawyers, Wall Street Executives, Nurses ... I could go on and on. The bottom line is that the town will not benefit if STV closes, it will only be a backwards step. CM also says something about Free Public School, nothing is free, we all pay for it one way or the other. I hope that this bickering and comparing schools comes to a halt and everyone gets on the same page, if STV closes down Broad Channel will be a community comprised of 908 homes and only one school for them to get what they deserve, the best education possible. There have been many disagreements in the Channel over the years and I can honestly say I was involved in many, but lets face it, THIS IS A NO BRAINER the entire community should be together on this one.

I'm trying to be neutral on this subject, since it's a sensitive issue. But in the future, let's try and keep these ongoing discussions in the Rants & Raves or another appropriate Forum instead of the Guestbook... At least we can identify who's who within the Forums.
2/10/05 6:44:32 PM - ip address:198.65.194.198
Last comment from me to CM (who still has not identified himself or herself) because I will, from hereon, agree with and respect David's wishes:
You are the one, the only one, who has tried to turn the sad (possible) closing of St Virgilius into a fight between SVS and PS 47. AGAIN, this is not what it is about. It is a COMMUNITY ISSUE.
If you do not agree, then stay the heck out of it.
With regards to whose child is receiving a better education, my husband and I know that we are giving our children a great education with the added benefit of religious guidance. My children are aware of the contents of these emails. I am showing them, by example, how to treat all people with respect even when you disagree with their opinion. I wonder if your children would feel the same way with regards to the contents of your emails.
End of discussion. You have added absolutely nothing positive to our cause .
Bye now,
Anne Marie Sullivan

The desicion to close SVS was made much to hastily. SVS is a part of our community and so a part of our lives. St. Virgilius holds our community together and it should continue to do so for years to come. I can't even tell you how many memories i have from SVS and i don't know what i would do without them. Please everybody stay together and help keep SVS alive.

TO THE PERSON WHO WONDERED WHY SOME PEOPLE LEFT THE GREAT TOWN OF BROAD CHANNEL,PLEASE TAKE IN CONSIDERATION IT SOMETIMES IS NOT BECAUSE YOU WANT TO. TO SOME IT WAS A HARTBREAKING DECISION, BUT HAD TO DONE FOR HEALTH REASONS, NOT BECAUSE WE DISLIKED BROAD CHANNEL, OR HAVE NO SAY ANYMORE.
IF WE HATED IT WE WOULDN'T KEEP GOING BACK FOR VISITS. BROAD CHANNEL IS FAMILY, WE ALWAYS STICK BY AND DEFEND FAMILY.

While the community – present and past -- is energized over the issue of Saint Virgilius’ closing, I would suggest a two-prong proactive approach. One should be the attempt to reverse the diocese decision. The second would be how to move forward should the decision not be reverse.
The diocese could lease the school property to a charter school with backing from private industry. With an infusion of capital, most of these concerns voiced here about dwindling enrollment over the lack of innovation in the physical plant as well as the availability of innovative technologies incorporated into the classroom could be addressed.
The conversion to a private charter school would not preclude the school from remaining a Catholic faith-based institution.
The link below could serve as a primer for anyone interested in looking at option two.

After reading the 'Save the School' Letter, I would just like to let everyone know that if the school does close the Broad Channel Athletic Club will still have its programs. We are in a number of different leagues, not just the Catholic Youth Organiztion (CYO). We run our own inhouse Little League, our football and cheerleaders are in the Nassau Suffolk League and we run our own in-house Summer basketball. As long as the church stays open we can still participate in CYO and if it closes I am sure St. Rose or another parish will open it doors to us. Especially since we have been providing sports for the Rockaway, Breezy Point and Howard Beach children for a number of years. So please be assured the Broad Channel Athletic Club is doing GREAT!!! Our first Little League registration is this Saturday, at the BCAC Memorial Fieldhouse. For more info. visit: http://www.BroadChannelAC.com
Thank You!

For those of you going to the reunion on March 17th, we have convinced my Dad, Charles Frank Jr, also known as Brother, to allow us to take him to the reunion. For those wanting to know what Broad Channel was like back in the "old days" here is a very good opportunity. He has a lot of great stories and can even tell you all about when the bridges were built. My grandfather, Uncle Charlie, built one of the first houses on Broad Channel- 111 E 8th Road. We are going to bring all of the pictures we have as some of them maybe your relatives. We have a lot of pictures of parades that my parents took. He has 9 pictures of Broad Channel that were sent to him before Christmas by the Arnemann family that he is viewing every two hours or so and remembering good times. We are looking forward to meeting you and my Dad is looking forward to sharing stories of old times with anyone who is willing to share. He lived in Broad Channel from 1920 to 1966 and we lost touch after Sister (Madeline Frank)died in 1982. If you are part of the Ott/Corbett/Keller family I know we have a lot of pictures as some of them are labeled and my Dad was able to name some of the people in the pictures. From the pictures it appears that things have probably not changed much as it was any reason for a party and keep the beer (or maybe something stronger at that time) flowing. Please have safe trips down.

I am the mother of two St. Virgilius gradutes and was a class mother for 17 years. You may say that tradition will not save our school but it should. I can't believe that people could actually argue over this. The closing of SVS would be tragic. That school was built on traditon. My son's went there, their father went there, and their grandmother went there. I would like to see my two grandsons go there in a few years. We can not let St. Virgilius close.

I do not understand how anyone in this community can be at odds at svs closing. Put aside the tradition and memories formed there, let's think about what is going to happen to our catholic religious education. Many people in this town are catholic, is there some sort of plan for ccd? also who thinks it is benifical to overcrowd P.S. 47. As far as St. Virigilius having nothing to offer, the fundraisers always offer fun events to attend and the education there is a good one. Our community needs svs for all of the children. As far as our sports closing and the suggestion being made that we can move them to Rockaway, why should we? We have always been a community, however small, that has provided our children with what it needs. We have never backed down from a fight being it purchasing our own land or the football field, am I the only one that remembers when there was no library here? We have fought for everything we have in this community to make it the great place to live and raise children that it is. I don't understand why so many people are resistant now. Closing svs is taking away our religion and our community spirit. We need to band together as a whole and help.

ok ok ok stop the bickering geez it sounds like abunch of 6th graders debating 47 vs. SVS back in the 60`s cmon lets talk about the good and bad times of SVS like 8`th grade graduations and parrish hall parties and nuns slapping the @@@@ out of us.Look times change and for whatever reason a decision was made and who knows maybe they won`t close it,but we`re Channelites we will get over it and survive but cmon save your strength for the bigger battle our childrens education

I cant believe that ST. Virgilius is closing! I always felt like it would be around forever. After reading through the guestbook I would like to say my piece regarding the comments made by the annonymous cm. ST V may not offer gym but it sure does offer its children the chance for an excellant education. being an alumni class of 1988 i can speak from experience.Every student in my class was accepted to the H.S. of his/her choice with almost half attending the Beach Channel honors program. As far as students entering other schools and being unprepared or below average, when I was a student we regulary competed in diocesan math and spelling bees where we either won or placed in the top three. I dont know all the issues behind the clossing of the school but it cant be due to poor educational standards.

As of yesterday afternoon the Vicar of education gave SVS 30 days to come up with a business plan. It is currently being put together by our steeting committee. A meeting is being held on Tuesday at 7:30 pm we need everyone's support. So come out and help keep our school open.
The fight is on and as always with God's help we will prevail..

I would have to disagree with CM when he/she says that the people who have moved out of Broad Channel should stay out of this. Some people that moved out of Broad Channel didnt do so because they didnt like the town or the people in it. Young adults such as myself move away for school and fall in love with their new surroundings, however they are forever tied in with the Channel. Just because I moved doesnt mean my whole family moved or my past moved. Like debbie said sometimes we move away for reasons that are heartbreaking and that is what keeps us going back. You put down SVS and say that it has nothing to offer children. You say that students who come out of there are behind. You are not happy because the closing of SVS will overcrowd 47. How do you think the students of SVS felt when 47 did not have a program for 7th and 8th graders and they came over to our school without hesitation increasing our class sizes. I did not need a new computer or modernized Gym to learn the values that I live by today. I commend the parents of SVS for all their dedication throughout the years.

Well I`ll tell ya... It sure is ironic no, actually surreal to see mixed in with all the rants and raves and personal attacks on each other {which by the way is not helping the cause for saving SVS} is all these wonderfully delightful and friendly messages and memories from past and present Channelites. I`ll tell you what, if these BC alumni keep seeing all this anger spewed on the website not only will they not visit it but maybe their last thought of BC will not be a pleasant one {remember strength in numbers}. Sister Daniel Marie would be rolling in her grave

My prayers and thoughts are with the present stewards of St. Virgilius during this time. It is my hope that Tuesday’s meeting does not focus on bake sales or raffles to save the school. In my conversations with the Rockville Centre Diocese officials about such issues as dwindling school populations and closings, I was told that the American dioceses were told by the Holy See that each diocese was to become self-sufficient in its operations so that future legal liabilities facing the American church would not reach into the Vatican coffers. So this issue is bigger than the closing of a parish school. A five-year business plan is needed to solidify and grow enrollment and bringing in funding from private industry. Coupons from cereal boxes will not do. A Computer Associates’ computer lab or a Sports Authority gymnasium is a better aspiration. BTW, both corporations have donated to parochial schools in the past.

 Dear My Fellow Neighbors,
I, Wendy Rissmeyer, a student at St. Virgilius, would like to ask you to help the school. We, the future, are the reason for this school. Do we want our school to close? Do we want to cry our eyes out for the shutting doors of this school? Do we want to travel out of our school? Do we want to have to make the students at SVS have to make friends at a different school? I say no!! I as you want to keep our school open. We have to do as much as we could to keep those doors of our school from closing. Although we are small, we are strong, and with all of us, we could save our school. So I thought of a program called SVS KIDS SAVE. What we do is to ask as many people as we could to donate to our school. We can ask businesses and stores to donate. We can draw pictures and sell them, hold lemonade stands, make crafts and sell them, or just ask for donations. We can even ask our friends, family, and our fellow employees to donate. Then we just send the money we collected to the office saying that it is a donation. The office's address is 16 Noel Rd.. We need to keep our school open. So I ask you with all my heart and tears that you help. I know it's hard but we can do it. We can stop the horror and tears from shedding. So please help and keep those doors from shutting. It's our turn to take a stand. It's just the Principal's and the Pastor's reasonability to keep the school open, it is ours, too. So that is why we have to do something for our future. The school depends on us. SO LETS DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank You,
Wendy Rissmeyer

Before I go I want to say something. I have been in St.V since kindergarten. And well... It has been the best school ever and gave me the best education. I am now in the 8th grade and leaving this year. From this education I was well prepared for High school. I got into all my school; St. Francis Prep, Molloy, and putting 3rd Stella Maris. And for Stella a got a scholarship. With all these schools I got into Honors Program. And people say this is not a well educated school. Well whoever that is, is not a very nice person. I am not saying that they are mean but that... How could you say that when people are so upset. If someone's mother died, would you say ha ha. No!!! So when you say that I am not getting a good enough education it breaks my heart. I cry each day thinking about how the school is closing. I can never go back to visit or when people ask me what school I came from I can't tell them about it because it is closing. Just writing this makes me cry. I am so upset. And I am sure many more people are. Well I am hear for you. I maybe just be a child but I have a very big mouth and that can take me very far. Also because I AM VERY WELL EDUCATED!!! I just want to say that if you talk about my school in an unmannerly way you should be ashamed. Because here I am crying and you are sitting there laughing at me and calling me, my community, and my school names. How dare you? Although we are small we still have 28 days!!! (I think) I love my school. I LOVE YOU BROAD CHANNEL!! Now don't make people mad when they read this page fighting about which school is better because both of them are very good schools. Yes, P.S. 47 and St. Virgilius. So let us not act 2 silly and help each other through these hard and rough times.

Me again. Hello everyone! I want to ask you if you have children, nieces, nephews, little neighbors, or friend's children? I want to ask to take a look at them. Imagine if their school was closing. Think of their faces and their brains. Think of how they might feel. I know it is hard, but just think for a moment. What if you were that child? How would you feel? You wouldn't want to leave your school. Or make new friends. You would want to keep the same class. You would want the same teachers. You would look foward each year to the next. You would strive for that year. Now let's say that is all taking a way from you. How would you feel? It would suck. Wouldn't it? So please help the children. Don't let St. Virgilius Close.

I have just finished reading the guest book and the latest comments under the save our school forum. Broad Channel in the past has been known to stand and fight. For Wendy, Adrianne and all who wrote I applaude you I just hope that thru the words and tears of the children and everyone who beleives that we can change this awful decision to close SVS comes to the meeting on Tuesday to show their support. If we all band together nothing is impossible. Its our school and its time we took back what has and always been, OUR SCHOOL! Its a part of the what we all inherited and what was built for us. The fact that there are two schools offers choices. And each in their own right have something to offer the children of this community. Its also time for us to stand together and show them what this community was built on. Dispite differences that have arisen over the years the one thing that we have alway done and hopefully always will be is UNITED. The community of BC does make a difference.
Come out on Tuesday and show your support "UNITED WE STAND, DIVIDED WE FALL"

I want to tell everyone how sad the students at SVS are. They are all very upset. SVS is like a family if you think about. The students are the brothers and sisters. The teachers are our mothers. Mrs. Phelan is our grandmother. Father John is our grandfather. Sometimes we disagree but we get over it. Other times are rough like this one and we stay and comfort each other. Some more times are great and happy. So we celebrate. Family never close though. They do fall apart. But never close. Always someone in that family will pull us up again. So really if you think about we are really just falling and need someone to pick us up. Then we will be back on our feet. Then we can celebrate again. So who will pick us up and put us on our feet? We do not know? Is it you?

This is in response to CM. I am a parent of two children at St. Vrigilius. I am a Catholic High School English teacher who is almost finished my Master's Degree in Education. I say his not to brag, but to let you know what the high school teachers are looking for. I and my colleagues are looking for students who have a sound basis in English, reading and math. I feel that my students are getting that sound education due to the results I see on the Terra Nova tests and the State ELA in math and Englsih. My daughter scored very high on both. I do not think that her having one forty minute period of gym each week is going to help her get the basics in math and reading. I went to St. Francis de Sales (class 0f 1986) and I had gym and a more "modern" education and I feel that St. V is doing fine. My daughter was in kindergarten in SFDS and I took her out when I moved here because I loved the setting of the school. I am true believer that anyone can get a good education anywhere if they and their parents put their energy into it. I know I am ranting but I am truly upset that this has caused people to say bad things about the school. And also notice those people did not sign their names. I know it is expensive, and maybe I can have a nicer life with 5 grand in my pocket, but I would never be able to look at my father again who never had a brand new car and we always struggled because he sacrificed to send me to twelve years of Catholic School. I would never be able to go visit my mom at Calverton Cemetary because she felt so passionately about Catholic Education and the Catholic church. If there are any errors in my spelling I apologize I am very upset. I feel I want Catholic education for my children and I want them on the island. Please keep your 'my school is better' routine to yourself.

To All With Regards to SVS & PS 47
I do not live in the community but have had the privilage to be informed of SVS which was described to me as Little House on The Praire. Small and Warm. I was unfortunately unhappy with the education that was being provided to my child in a catholic school. I paid for private education since my child was 3 years of age. Lawrence Woodmere Academy was where he started and not so much the education because at 3 years old lets face it he was not being taught to be a scholar, my problem in Woodmere was I had parents who placed their children in school for their own time out. I placed my child in school for social skills since I had no other small children around. Education is very important to both my husband and I. We paid double the tuition 3 days a week 2 hours a day was $3,300.00. I then put him in an incredible school The Learning Tree in Middle Village. Which by the time my son left after Pre-K I was up to $5,400.00 in Tuition. My sons education was quite advanced. It was well worth every cent. I then put him in a Catholic School with a Gym and activities, "so they claim" to find out by my son that gym was being provided every other week. I was not interested in activities I wanted to know why it was that my child was able to do homework in Kindergarten and 1st grade and get wonderful report cards without help from my husband and I. I then went on line to educate myself to see what it is my child should be learning as far as the cirriculum to find out they were a whole grade behind. I immediately knew what I had suspected, it was time to get my son out before I lose him. You do not only lose a child in life to the streets you lose them if you are not involved in knowing where you can help them grow. My son has been on the computer since he was 2 years of age. I noticed that my son was being taught to read in a manner I have never had the opportunity of learning. He was not only having difficulty I too did not understand how anyone would ever learn to read how they were teaching. I then started teaching my son my way of reading which came easy to him but he was being torned between the teacher teaching her way and Mom teaching hers. I then called and made and appointment with SVS and met with Mrs. Phelan. She tested my son and inform me that my son was not reading at the level the children at SVS were reading. She informed me that if my child had difficulty catching up he would have to be held back. This brought tears to my eyes. I not only felt upset and angry. I was disappointed that I suspected this 1 year prior and thought perhaps it was my imagination. I was devastated to think that all the time I personally invested to always advance my child and the money we had spent in education in private schools now was lost in 2 years in this Catholic school were he had fallen behind. I immediately enrolled him to SVS which to my surprise had a children to teacher ratio that I paid alot more money for. Mrs. Phelan was extremely helpful in providing me with all the books my child would have the honors of learning from that year. Other schools never showed me the books when I asked to provide me with the books so I may see the cirriculum and education which will be taught to my child. I felt I wanted a Catholic school for the foundation they provide. I came from a public education and public school is not free nothing is free. The children in public school do have more resources and they should everyone pays for that education. The people that choose to put their children in Catholic or private education are doing it and sacrificing things they want or perhaps need. They feel this is what they want for their child not to say one is better than the other. If Ms. Murphy is what I have to look forward to in SVS my Husband & I are giving SVS and the community of Broad Channel 110% of whatever it takes to help them to accomplish their goals because the education and the cirriculum my son is getting their is what I paid double the tuition for. P.S.: Private education is $13,500 from grades 1-4, grades 5-8 about $15,000.00 and it caps grades 9-12 at about $16,500.00. So tell me is SVS worth the fight to keep it open or should our public schools become so crowed no one learns...

You know what gets me about CM - not her opinion about the school (although wrong, she is entitled to it)not the fact that she attacked my religious practices by saying she doesn't see me in church on Sunday (probably because she's not there) not saying that our kids have to go to 47 for tutoring (i suppose she's referring to Savonna going to Resource Room - and that's a cheap shot)... nope none of that makes me mad .... the thing that gets me is her not signing her name... tells me she's just starting trouble and doesn't really stand behind what she wrote - my question is why bother?

It appears to me -- from conversations I have had with some of the people involved -- that a deal has been brokered where STV will become the newest annex for PS 47. Perhaps the diocese will provide religious instruction to those seeking it as a concession to closing the school and leasing it back to the NYC Board of Education.
It appears from the outside looking in that the broker has family ties on all sides of the deal and that despite what the community wants this deal was cut probably at a Sunday family dinner in October perhaps.
What a shame to lose the ability to have a choice in your family’s education. My prayers are with the families of STV, who never really had a chance to save the school, because before they really knew the school was in peril the die was cast and it will play out in the next few weeks.

 Michael,
I sincerly hope that you are wrong about the posible brokerage of SVS to PS 47, I would love to know who sponsered this brokerage, although if it is true I probably already know as does everyone else who lives here. Lets just hope that the the community and the parents of SVS can turn this around.

One last note for all who read this forum --- I have had the oportunity to find out the stats at SVS and was not only quite surprised to find that the Children's math and reading scores are 75% who are at or above grade level. This includes the entire group without removing Special Education. The Catholic school does not allow them to remove special education from there overall numbers. Which would give them a higher percentage rate.
Anyone looking to sign a pledge to put there chilren into SVS based upon this alone please
email BroadChannel@aol.com or stop by SVS and get a pledge with the influx of pledges showing that student enrollment is up for the comming year we the communtiy and SVS have a better chance of staying alive.

Let me add my agreement with both Pat and Margaret, that it is not Father John and I do so knowing that in anger I did blame him at least in part. Seems that like most Channelities my mouth can run ahead of my head on occassion. Father John is not to blame for the current stituation. The school got into its present condition over years, not months. As to the hows and whys, in retropect I don't care. I don't care about alleged missing funds, I don't care about weather the parish council did or did not do enough, I don't care about any of it.
And neither should any one else. The time for finger pointing (and I have done my share...mea culpa) is over. The simple fact is we have an opportunity to keep the school open. We have a chance, but fighting amongest oursevles will not get it done.
Our there other opportunities for the children of the parish, in both sports and education...You bet there are...is now the time to talk about them...not a chance...if we are to save St. Virgilius we have to band together. We got one shot, let's make it count, because while I regret what I said about Father John I stand by the theory that the closing of the school will lead to the closing of the church and that will lead to disaster for the community

Hi, I am currently working on an oral history term paper. The topic of my paper is A Description of the town I live in. It is not as simple as that, however. I need to ask people to describe their experiences growing up in Broad Channel and then compile a 6-9 page report. I am asking that any one who can help me with a brief description please do. Positive and negative and including personal stories from your childhood. The report will not include the names of anyone who contributes only their stories. Any help you could give would be appriciated. Thank You.

Hi Jill.............You should included your e-mail address on your posting so people can e-mail you directly. I have some memories of our island under the forum-memories of BC. You can also read about our history in the albums put together by the Broad Channel Historical committee. They have all their books in our library. I'd love to read your report when you are finished. I love hearing stories myself of Broad Channel. I just recently met someone on this guestbook that sent me pictures of my house and my grandmothers house from when he lived in it during the 1950's and learned how the house came from Carnise Brooklyn. Good Luck with your report.

 Dear Tom Gillen
i think if you write a letter in a public forum such as the wave and then change your mind, deciding that you "spoke in anger" the place for such a retraction should also be in that public forum. you owe Fr. John an apology. to say the things you said about him based on a single mass you went to is wrong.
i have gotten to know him a little bit over the past few months and think he is great as do my children.
i also saw him rapping for the kids of SVS during a catholic schools week mass, the kids all laughed and he definately got there attention, everyone else there thought it was hysterical especially coming from a man who is usually so soft spoken and always acts as gentlman
i am happy to see you realized you made a mistake and it takes a big man to admit it, but Fr.John deserves what is due to him

Kieran, you are absolutely right. I sent a letter off to the wave on Sunday (well with no mail pick up on Sunday or monday) with an apoogly to Father John, for those statements directed at him. I am goign to call the wave office and urge them to print it but since they like controvesary I may be over my head. But you are right, I also did speak with Father on Sunday. I am a big fan of when "your wrong, your wrong." (and by the way if I learned anyway to admit when you make a mistake I learned it from years on a parish council with your Father and your namesake, Msg Martin)

Heyyy bC! I just want to say good luck to keeping st. virgilius open. I just graduated from St. Virgilius last year ('04) I now attend Archbishop Molloy high school along with five other SVS'04 graduates. I really miss st. virgilius we had such a great class with so many memories. I loved St. Virgilius and everybody there but I mean its 2005 the school hasnt changed since the 1960's. Going to high school was like um Hello Reality! you have no idea what kind of change it is. Dont get me wrong St. Virgilius was awesome and I would love to see it stay open, but if it does stay open they really are going to have to make some changes.

lets not make the school issue a mets versus yankees debate ...who and what is better ... the idea is that all parents are concerned about their childs education ...school is one thing it is also what is taught at home ..also...public school is not FREE ...WE DO PAY TAXES ...

DO OTHER PARISHES IN THE BROOKLYN/QUEENS DIOCESE OFFER "SUNDAY SCHOOL" ON A WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON . MAYBE THE CCD PROGRAM SHOULD BE MOVED TO SUNDAY MORNING BEFORE A MASS ,WHEN THE CHILDREN MAY GO TO MASS AFTERWARDS AND CAN BE TAUGHT BY PARENTS OF THE PARISH FOR THAT TIME PERIOD . THIS IS A SUGGESTION THAT MAY VALUE THE CHILDREN INVOLVED.I LIVED ON LONG ISLAND FOR A FEW YEARS AND THIS IS HOW IT WAS DONE AND I THINK IT WORKS .IT MAY BRING A FAMILY THAT DOES NOT GO TO CHURCH ,BACK TO CHURCH .GOING TO CHURCH IS A GOOD FAMILY VALUE .REMEMBER THE CHURCH HAS AN OPEN DOOR POLICY ,REGARDLESS OF WHEN THE LAST TIME YOU WERE THERE,OR WHO YOU ARE . THIS IS AN IDEA AN NOT TO UPSET ANYONE BY ANY MEANS ,BUT UNDERSTAND WHY CHILDREN TAKE RELIGION INSTRUCTION .

Stephanie, That is why I like St. Virgilius. the fact that it has not changed. I like that the principal was my husband's third grade teacher, Mrs. Murphy, Ms. Bevers, and Mrs. McMahon also were his teachers and the teachers of his two brothers and one sister. I think that is what makes the school so special. As a parent I know that the teachers know my children on a level that makes me feel very comfortable. As a high school teacher I see that most of my freshmen need a reality check the first month of school. I make about fifty phone calls in September. Some of them come from very large middle schools and some come from the smallest Catholic Schools like ours. Some kids come with a grand knowledge of technology that they received in a large Long Island Middle School but they do not know how to spell, identify a noun or a verb, or how to write. Those students might adjust better than the students that come from small Catholic schools, but I think in the long run I would rather have my children have the strong old fashioned base of reading, writing, spelling, and math that I feel they are receiving. I went to St. Francis de Sales and I felt that when I went to St. Francis Prep I also needed a reality check! Good luck in Molloy Stephanie.

Hi everyone I think everyone who has read Mr. Schwach's Editorial this week will join me in a boycott of the Wave. His article not only insulted St. Virgilius but also Catholic education in general and really did not make any valid points!

 Beth,
I went to St Virgilius before i moved to upstate NY. I then went to a larger public school and I can spell and I can read and I know what a noun and a verb is. I dont feel that it is because I went to St virgilius. Maybe you should read what you write and then you should practice what you are preaching to other people and that being "keep your my school is better routine to yourself"

Jennifer I did not mean to offend any public school people. I was just trying to prove a point: that most high schoolers need a reality check when entering high school. I have been teaching at a very large high school and I felt I can just mention to Stephanie and others that I do have students who come from some of the largest middle schools in L.I. and they have had all of the things a lot of people in Broad Channel think that St. Virgilius need yet SOME of them , NOT ALL are lacking in the basics, and high school is still a big adjustment. I never said all public school students do not know what a noun or a verb is. I think you should read what I wrote as you told me to and not read into it with such anger. Again, I was merely making a point, not saying "all public schools are bad." I do not feel I have a better than anyone attitude, I just feel that as a high school teacher I can provide valuable insight through experience in teaching since 1998. I am just trying to save my daughter's school. The school that my first grader loves so much she does not want to attend anywhere next year. When we discussed our other options she asked if we could just "skip school." I do not know where your anger came from or what you meant when you asked me to "practice what I preach." I think a lot of people keep forgetting it is about the children and not the whole public school vs. Catholic school argument. I am doing this for my children and if I did not have anything nice to say I would just keep my mouth shut. I feel very protective of my daughter's and their school and I want them to be happy. If you had children (I do not know if you do), isn't that what you would want for your children? Again I apologize if I gave out a "better than anyone attitude" or a "my school is better than yours" attitude.

To all of the people involved, committee members and volunteers that worked the "Night at the Races" Sunday afternoon, you all did a great job! My family and I had a nice time and got to see a few faces we don't see on a regular basis. I have to admit though, I was disappointed at the number of school parents that did not attend. This was not a "typical" fundraiser; the school needs all the support from the community it can get right now, but it can't be left up to the community to make each event a success. I know, I have been involved in many, many fundraisers for the different organizations in BC and will always be there to support the efforts of Broad Channel Fundraisers in one way or another, but in order to get support you need to show support and attend for your particular cause. I wish all the parent's of St. Virigilius School the best of luck.
