Hi everyone... just keeping your special community in our sincerest thoughts and prayers. We expect and hope St. Virgilius to prevail in this latest crisis. Having 2 of my own daughters, I know too well the benefits a Catholic Education affords our young people. Our family wishes to help in any way we can to succeed for the people of Broad Channel. Keep up the great work!!

Hello, to the Class of 1971. Gosh thats sound so long ago, but it feels like yesterday. Remember the dances at SVS Parish Hall, or the class trips to Museums,Lincoln Center, or just to the movies to see "The Ten Commandments". How about the lifelong friendships made. I have fond memories of my 8 years at St. Virgilius. The Sisters, the lay teachers, my classmates, punchball on Noel Road with Fr. Maloney and Sr. Richard Ann. The Choir singing in church under the direction of Mr. Bill Yusker and then Peter Gillen now Fr. Peter Gillen. The education and teaching of gospel values were there then and they are still now. I hope and pray that St. Virgilius will have many more years educating the youth of Broad Channel. I am committed in helping SVS Alumni Assn, Parents Assn, Steering Committee in helping to find ways to maintain and increase enrollment and raise the needed funds to help create an endowment fund. I hope all my clasmate feel the same way and that they have been blessed in the same ways that I have been. I know with the help of all alumni, friends and family this can and will be accomplished. Good Luck!

I am so saddened at the possible closing of St. Virgilius. No, I have not resided in the Channel in many years, but I will always call it home. I was one of those students who spent k-6th grade at P.S. 47, then transferred to St.Virgilius. I have nothing but wonderful memories of both schools. I am still close friends with many from my St. Virgilius years. Despite the fact that I have lived in Tennessee for over 12 years now, I chose to have both of my children baptized in St. Virgilius after they were born because St. Virgilius will always be my "home" parish. I want to do anything and everything that I can to ensure that the school remains open. Even though I am far away, I can still stuff some envelopes, make some phone calls or send some emails! If there is anything at all that I can do, someone please let me know! In the meantime, St. Virgilius and Broad Channel will be in my prayers.

Just saying hello to all the people back in the Channel. I stop by this page from time to time to see who is still around. I always think fondly of life on that little island and thank each person there for that little piece of themself they gave to me as a learning experience. A repeating theme in these meassages and pages is the thought that there was no better place to grow up than in Broad Channel. I can only echo that thought

 Hello,
I was a student at St Virgilius many years ago. It brings saddness to my heart and tears to my eyes to hear it is closing. I moved from the Channel back in 1987, but that little school and community will always be in my heart.

Hi from Toronto, Ontario. I grew up in Flushing, Queens and my father's family lived on Beach 114 St.,Rockaway Beach. I was a very small child during the late 1950's and we often went to visit dad's family in the summer. Our journey used to take us through Broad Channel. I remember it to be not much more than a few old shacks and shantys with lots of fishing poles leaning against the walls. For me, the landmark was a big sign that said, "BROAD CHANNEL DAY CAMP". When I saw that, I knew that we were almost to our destination. Did anyone out there ever actually participate in "Broad Channel Day Camp"? In addition, there used to be several clam bars along the road there where one could stop and have some cold little necks and beers. You stood outside at the counter. Those clambar visits ceased however, the day that my mother saw a jumbo sized rat foraging on the floor behind the counter as the employees went about their business while ignoring it. These days when I visit NYC in the summer, I still drive to Rockaway Beach and I must say that you folks have done a beautiful job to make your community really nice. In the 1950's it was fairly primitive but it is far from that now. Congratulations on creating a beautiful community and the best of luck to you all.

Wonderful news! St Virgilius will reopen in September stronger and better than ever!!!
We have done much work to get to this point and we have even more hard work in front of us. We are up to the challenge and are thankful that we have been given a chance to prove that this community loves and supports St Virgilius.
Thanks to all for your prayers and pledges...keep them coming!
God bless...

I have a photo of my father on the front steps of his family's summer home in Broad Channel. It was taken in approximately 1905. It looks like it was a wonderful place!

I am first generation resident of Broad Channel (not even, I moved here last year and loving it)but I have a different point of view on the Medical Center and Parking Lot.
1) The Lot will save us from the little parking left on Noel. A house built instead of the Parking lot would increase the number of cars on the street due to the new owners cars.
2) The Medical center would be great if there is an emegency and the bridges are closed. We will have doctors and nurses.
3) I hope that having a medical center, like the Vollies, would have internships for nurses and doctors from the neighborhood. Or at least hire receptionists and medical billers from the neighborhood. It will be a good thing for young women to think about working in a medical profession.
4) No Grafitti! No "the ugly-ist abadoned building" in the neighborhood
5)I am from Forest Hills with lots of doctors in buildings and medical centers just like Howard's. Not as pretty as Howards though. Some had parking lots and the only safety issue we had in Forest Hills was Death Blvd (Queens Blvd) similar to our Cross Bay Blvd.
We know to walk with caution in Broad Channel from years of living next to Cross Bay Blvd. I dont see a safety issue with the lot.
So I am for the Medical Center, Parking Lot, and cafe. I need coffee! I need a new doctor since Forest Hills is 30 minutes away and it is hard to find parking.
Michele

Hello fellow Channelites, I am also saddened to here about good ol' St. Virgilius. I went there from 1st through 3rd, then again in 8th grade. I have many fond memories of her and the people I went to school with. Hopefully everyone is doing well, hope to visit soon....

Does anyone really think that Charlie Howard is building the Medical Center for the money? Charlie has built a business ( Call - A - Head )which is the most successful in the industry. Charlie does not need the money, the fact is he is building the Medical Center because he wants to help bring the Channel into the 21st century.

Happy Easter!

just a piece of information to the people who are questioning Charlies'motives. Back in 1995/96,
i spoke with Charlie regarding his commitment to
the BCAC and the lighting of the football field.
i was taken back by his excitement over this
project and he promised his full support. He came through on all ends. lights, scoreboard, bleechers etc. He also spoke to me back then about his vision for the community to become an even greater place to live, mentioning things like a pharmacy, doctors' office, and a luncheonette. Obviously he is coming through again. Also, we should be thankful for his vision- just check your property values from when he started these developments until now...

Congrats to the students, teachers and everyone else on their hard work and saving St Virgilius. Although I was not a student of the school I am glad to see it will remain open.
3/24/05 2:20:45 PM - ip address:24.105.142.76
Variarces are done based on each request. Like when the Vollies needed the area from when their new firehouse will be built, they needed a new rezoning. Just because they got a rezoning, did not give Charles Howard the go ahead for his variance. He has to ask from the beginning. Variances are not based on past variances in the area.

I cannot believe all this nonsense is being written over a parking lot! Has anyone noticed the parking lot next to the library, which is next to the park, which is across the street from homes? Or the space next to the park on East 16th Road, across from homes where people choose to park? Or on West 17th Road corner where neighbors choose to park? The proposed parking lot on Noel Road corner can be of some concern to the neighboring homes, but as far as safety of the children when they are coming or going to school there is a crossing guard there, who I'm sure will be informed of the parking situation and will use caution when the children are passing.

Many of you will notice that some recent Guestbook entries have been changed or deleted. I've retained a copy of them but they will not be displayed here.
I've only done this a few times in the past and it's been done to preserve the integrity of the Guestbook, this website and the communitys reputation. I, and other visitors, do not want to read personal wars or see them continued here.
If you have an anonymous love/hate opinion of Broad Channel and/or a community member, please feel free to post it in the Forums where your identity won't be so 'anonymous'.

Hi, Im not from Broad Channel, but I used to hang out there alot... I live in Rockaway and I enjoy reading up on this site to see whats going on in my old favorite town. but when I saw former entries were deleted i was rather offended. I think it is very rude that you deleted peoples comments, obviously they want them heard. I can understand if you do not want them in the guestbook, while then put them in the rants and raves do not just go deleting them. I checked the web site all over and I can not find a particular post written by Stephanie Wagner. I read it this morning and I thought it was excellent, the grammar, the wording, everything. I later showed my friend and she said that she knew Stephanie's mother, Margaret, and she told me Stephanie was very young, at the beginning of her teenage years. It is so hard to believe a young teenager can have that much to say and feel so strongly about it. I applaud her and wish her the best of luck in life, because I can see she is going to go very far. I just want to say Steph, I have never read a better post. What you wrote really shows how you feel and how strong your love is for your family. This is what Broad Channel is like. People like Stephanie are the type that Broad Channel used to be full of. Lets get that spirit back, you should proud of what your neighbors are doing to perfect this town. Awesome Job Steph!

Hi Lindsay, I don't think I know who you are, but it was a very nice comment, thank you. However, I do think it was a good thing that David deleted the posts, they were basically people saying what they wanted on the computer so that they can hide behind the computer screen rather than coming to the actually meeting and voicing their opinons. I will continue this discussion in the rants and raves... where it should be.
3/25/05 12:07:32 AM - ip address:152.163.100.201
Greetings Broad Channel residents. I am a former resident although I lived there for such a short time and so long ago, no one will probably remember me. My parents moved us to BC in May of '69 and moved us out in Aug. We lived at 202 E 8th Rd. I was 14 at the time. After growing up in a "normal" neighborhood near Kings Plaza in Brooklyn, it was an absolute delight and incredible adventure to spend my summer of '69 in a New England fishing village. Or so it seemed to me. That summer was the best summer of my youth and I still have great memories of that place. Playing stickball alongside the train station; catching horseshoe crabs on the beach on the other side of the tracks; jumping from roof to roof of the bungalows on stilts at the end of Walton Rd. On the 4th of July we sat on the beach on E 9th Rd and Walton to watch the fireworks from Rockaway. I could go on but you know what I'm talking about. Broad Channel will live forever in my memory and my heart. Does anyone know the whereabouts of Anthony Amato or Anne Hanour (my first girlfriend!)? I don't remember too many more names of all the teenage boys I hung out with that summer. There were two brothers that lived across from the station on West Rd. One of them was named Fran. That's all I can remember. My name is Bill Ramsay. God Bless all of you there in BC!!

I'd like to offer a bit of insight with my decision to remove all postings related to the writings of an anonymous poster....
A) Arguments and accusations do not belong in a Guestbook....
B) Escalating arguments and childish retaliations do not belong in a Guestbook either....
C) When a webmaster receives email complaints and concerns, some of which were from individuals who were VERY upset about the content - the webmaster needs to take appropriate action to put a stop to the problem....
D) I've asked nicely in the past to keep such arguments in the Forums. There's even a plea at the top the Guestbook's main page requesting to keep the Guestbook civilized.... And as I've stated in my last post, I have retained a copy of the posts in question. I will take the time to re-post them in the Rants & Raves topic within the Forums soon....
I'm sorry if some of you disagree with my actions. There is a large viewing audience to this Guestbook- both residents, non-residents, adults and children... All of whom expect to read Guestbook entries, not anonymous biased opinions that start full fledged fighting. (Which is what I was dealing with yesterday)...
So please take my position into account on this matter....
Thanks again for visiting.

Hey Dave.... Another Hot issue in town kept your site busy yesterday. I would just like to thank all the townspeople who came out to support the new Medical Building. Just to let everyone know, Mr. Howard recieved a letter of support from the Broad Channel Civic Assocation last night, supporting the project. Thanks again to EVERYONE!!!

I just finished reading your 'rants' section, especially the comments that were deleted from the 'guestbook'. Looks certainly are deceiving. To an outsider such as myself driving through, your community looks so peaceful and tranquil, but I see that for people who live in such a beautiful neighbourhood, you certainly are a feisty group. Try to calm down a bit and enjoy the place where you live. Not everyone is so lucky to live in such a nice neighbourhood.I hope that you can work things out so that everybody is at least somewhat satisfied.
3/29/05 7:04:38 PM - ip address:209.148.145.95
Frank- It is good to care and it leads to feisty-ness. I just moved in last year and noticed that if you live on an island, hating the neighborhood next to you doesn't work, hence in-fighting. It is worth it. Other places that don't care get projects, senior houses, and insane houses. Broad Channel is getting better than ever! Almost time to get the boat back in the water!!
3/30/05 12:45:19 AM - ip address:24.90.205.2
And almost time for those tiki bars to come back oout on our decks.........ooohhh the islands best-time of year!! Kayaks, fishing, swimming, skiing..oh theirs so much here to do.... Michele you're have to stop by in your boat this summer. We'll have a Margarita-Bayside!!! No I wouldn't changed where I lived for the world!!!
3/30/05 4:36:52 PM - ip address:205.188.116.133
Margaret- Thanks for the invite! I saw lots of boats today out on the bay so soon so will our boat come out of storage!

Hey everyone ... Adults Putting on The Hits is coming up again on April 8th.... Please come out and support St. V ... its for a good cause and its a good night out... I don't think there will be many people to object coming out to support since I read how many people are trying to keep the school open ... well here is your chance to put you but in a seat and help out .... its only 30 dollars I believe though I could be wrong, and its drinking food and entertainment with dancing after ... so come out and give support ... hey maybe put at act together ...
