Broad Channel, often referred to as "the Venice of New York" because of the canals affording resident's waterfront property, is the only inhabited island in Jamaica Bay, Queens.

Broad Channel is a tranquil island neighborhood, one mile long and four blocks wide, connected to the Rockaway peninsula and the mainland of Queens by Cross Bay Boulevard and its two bridges.  It was, at first, just a small sand island surrounded by marsh with only a few fishermen's shacks.

The island was expanded by development landfill and Long Island Railroad construction at the turn of the century and by 1912 the City of New York took ownership.

Originally filled with summer bungalows and small summer homes on leased City property, the area experienced a development renaissance that is still ongoing when the City offered the leased land for sale to resident occupants in the 1980's.

Broad Channel has evolved from a fishing station on the Long Island Railroad into a tightly knit community of more than 3,000 residents.  The area is now a growing, year round residential community of approximately 1500 homes.
